Driving licence renewal in Cayman Islands

Written from published rules on 26 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Department of Vehicle and Drivers' Licensing (DVDL).

Renewing a Cayman Islands driving licence generally involves completing an application, passing an eye test, and submitting required documents to the Department of Vehicle and Drivers' Licensing (DVDL). The process can usually be completed in person.

Your timing

It is advisable for individuals to begin the renewal process several weeks before their licence's expiration date. This allows sufficient time to gather all necessary documents, complete any required tests, and accommodate potential waiting times for appointments or processing at the DVDL offices. Early renewal helps ensure uninterrupted driving privileges.

Start 14 days ahead

This accounts for gathering documents, scheduling an eye test if needed, and potential processing time at the DVDL. The actual processing time for renewal can be much quicker if all documents are in order and the eye test is completed.

The process

  1. 1Ensure eligibility for renewal (e.g., no outstanding tickets or disqualifications).
  2. 2Undergo an eye test, which can be performed at the DVDL or by a registered optometrist/ophthalmologist. If performed by an external professional, a completed eye test form is required.
  3. 3Complete the application form for driving licence renewal.
  4. 4Gather all required supporting documents.
  5. 5Visit a DVDL office in person to submit the application, documents, and proof of eye test.
  6. 6Pay the applicable renewal fee.
  7. 7Receive the renewed driving licence.

The fee for a standard one-year renewal is CI$25, and for a five-year renewal, it is CI$125. These fees are subject to change and should be confirmed directly with the DVDL. Payment methods accepted typically include cash, cheque, or credit/debit card.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure all outstanding tickets or driving-related fines are settled before attempting to renew, as this may prevent renewal.
  • An eye test is mandatory for renewal; confirm if you need to bring a certificate from an external provider or if you can complete it at DVDL.
  • Verify the specific requirements for your legal status in the Cayman Islands, as different statuses may require different supporting documents.
  • Always check the DVDL's official website or contact them directly for the most current fees, required documents, and office hours before visiting.
