Driving licence renewal in Finland

How to renew a driving licence — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 3 September 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Liikenne- ja viestintävirasto Traficom (Finnish Transport and Communications Agency).

Renewing a Finnish driving licence involves submitting an application through the official transport agency's portal or at a service provider's office. The process generally requires a valid identification method, a new photograph, and potentially a medical certificate depending on the licence category and the holder's age.

Your timing

It is recommended to begin the renewal process several months before the current document expires. This accounts for potential processing times for physical cards and the time needed to obtain any necessary medical documentation.

Start 60 days ahead

Processing typically takes several weeks, and starting early ensures there is time to address any requests for additional medical information if required.

The process

  1. 1Verify if a new medical certificate is required for the specific licence category or age bracket.
  2. 2Obtain a new digital photograph if your previous photograph is more than five years old.
  3. 3Log in to the Traficom online e-service portal using strong electronic identification (e.g., banking codes or mobile ID).
  4. 4Complete the renewal application form online and upload necessary attachments.
  5. 5Pay the renewal fee through the e-service portal.
  6. 6Receive the new driving licence by post at the address registered in the Population Information System.

What to bring

  • Strong electronic identification (banking codes, mobile certificate, or electronic ID card)
  • Digital photograph (if not already in the system)
  • Medical certificate (if required by age or health condition)

The fee varies depending on whether the application is processed online or at a service point; current fees are listed on the official Traficom website.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure your current address in the Population Information System is correct, as the new card will be mailed to that location.
  • Check if your medical certificate has been submitted electronically by a doctor, as physical paper forms may require separate delivery.
  • Avoid leaving the renewal until the very last days of validity to account for potential administrative processing delays.
