Driving licence renewal in Ghana

How to renew a driving licence — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 3 September 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).

Renewing a Ghanaian driving licence involves a verification process through the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA). Applicants are generally required to undergo an eye test and present their existing licence for replacement.

Your timing

It is recommended to initiate the renewal process at least two to four weeks before the current licence expires. This accounts for potential queuing at licensing centers and the time required for data verification and card production.

Start 14 days ahead

Processing times can fluctuate based on the volume of applicants at regional DVLA offices.

The process

  1. 1Visit an official DVLA office or authorized test center.
  2. 2Present the current, expiring driving licence for validation.
  3. 3Complete the mandatory eye examination.
  4. 4Complete the official application forms provided by the DVLA staff.
  5. 5Pay the required renewal fee at the designated payment point.
  6. 6Have biometric data or photographs captured if required for the new card generation.
  7. 7Collect the renewed licence once processing is complete.

What to bring

  • Current/Expiring driving licence
  • Completed application form (provided on-site)
  • Proof of identity (such as a Ghana Card or valid passport)
  • Payment receipt for the renewal fee

Fees are set by the DVLA and are subject to periodic review; applicants should confirm current charges directly via the official DVLA portal or at the service office.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure the physical card is not significantly damaged, as illegible details can delay the verification process.
  • Attempting to renew through unauthorized third-party agents can lead to fraudulent documents or additional unnecessary fees.
  • Regional offices may have different operating hours, so confirming office availability beforehand is advised.
