Vehicle inspection renewal in Ghana

How to renew a vehicle inspection — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 2 September 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).

Vehicle inspection in Ghana, commonly referred to as a Roadworthy Certificate, involves a technical assessment of a vehicle's mechanical and safety systems to ensure compliance with national road safety standards. This process is mandatory for all registered vehicles and is conducted at authorized testing centers before a certificate is issued or renewed.

Your timing

Most vehicle owners initiate the renewal process at least two weeks before the current certificate expires. This buffer accounts for potential queue times at testing stations and allows for minor repairs if a vehicle fails the initial inspection.

Start 14 days ahead

Early application helps avoid lapses in coverage and potential penalties for driving with an expired roadworthy sticker.

The process

  1. 1Locate an authorized DVLA testing center or private vehicle test station.
  2. 2Present the vehicle for a physical inspection of brakes, lights, tires, and emissions.
  3. 3Pay the prescribed inspection and certification fees at the center.
  4. 4Receive the official Roadworthy Certificate and the corresponding sticker.
  5. 5Affix the new sticker to the designated area on the vehicle's windshield.

What to bring

  • Previous Roadworthy Certificate
  • Vehicle registration documents
  • Valid identification of the owner or representative

Fees for vehicle testing vary based on the vehicle type, size, and classification; check the official DVLA fee schedule or the local testing station for the current price list.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure all vehicle lights, mirrors, and safety indicators are functional before arrival to avoid immediate failure.
  • Verify that the testing station is officially recognized by the DVLA to ensure the certificate is valid.
  • Check for any outstanding traffic violations or registration discrepancies that may block the renewal process.
