Work permit renewal in Ukraine

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Державна служба зайнятості України (State Employment Service of Ukraine).

Renewing a work permit in Ukraine typically involves submitting an application and required documents to the State Employment Service before the current permit expires. The process aims to extend the validity of legal employment for foreign nationals in Ukraine.

Your timing

It is generally advisable to initiate the work permit renewal process at least one to two months before the current permit's expiration date. This allows ample time for gathering all necessary documents, submitting the application, and accounting for potential processing delays by the State Employment Service. Early application helps ensure continuous legal employment status.

Start 30 days ahead

This is a general recommendation to start the process well in advance of the current permit's expiration, allowing for document preparation, submission, and processing by the authority.

The process

  1. 1Ensure the employer is registered with the State Employment Service and that the foreign employee's current work permit is valid.
  2. 2Gather all necessary documents, which typically include an application form, a copy of the current work permit, a new employment contract (or an amended existing one), a copy of the foreign national's passport, and documents confirming payment of the state fee.
  3. 3The employer prepares and submits the complete set of documents to the regional center of the State Employment Service at least 20 calendar days before the expiration of the current permit.
  4. 4The State Employment Service reviews the application and documents within the established timeframe.
  5. 5Upon approval, the renewed work permit (or an extension of the existing one) is issued to the employer.
  6. 6The employer collects the renewed permit and provides a copy to the foreign employee.

What to bring

  • Application from the employer
  • Copy of the foreign national's passport with a notarized translation into Ukrainian (if not in Ukrainian)
  • Copy of the current work permit for foreign nationals
  • A draft employment contract (or an amended contract) certified by the employer, signed by the employer and the foreign national
  • A document confirming payment of the state fee for permit extension (payment details to be confirmed with the authority)
  • Employer's registration documents (e.g., extract from the Unified State Register of Legal Entities, Individual Entrepreneurs and Public Organizations, to be confirmed with the authority)

The state fee for extending a work permit varies depending on the permit's duration. The exact amount and current payment details should be confirmed directly with the State Employment Service of Ukraine or its regional offices, or on their official website.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure all documents are correctly prepared, translated (if necessary), and certified according to Ukrainian legal requirements to avoid rejection.
  • Submit the application within the stipulated timeframe, typically no later than 20 calendar days before the current permit expires, but ideally earlier.
  • Confirm the exact amount of the state fee and the correct payment details with the State Employment Service before making any payments.
  • The employer is responsible for applying for and obtaining the work permit, not the individual employee. Consistent communication with the employer is crucial.
