Vehicle registration renewal in Ukraine

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Головний сервісний центр МВС (Main Service Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs).

Renewing a vehicle registration in Ukraine involves updating the vehicle's certificate of registration, known as the 'tekhpasport', through the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The process typically requires a physical inspection of the vehicle and the submission of ownership and identification documents to a service center.

Your timing

It is generally recommended to initiate the renewal process at least 30 days before any intended travel or if the document is damaged, as appointment availability at Service Centers can fluctuate and internal processing times vary.

Start 30 days ahead

This accounts for potential wait times for administrative processing and, if applicable, the time required for a mandatory vehicle inspection.

The process

  1. 1Verify the status of the vehicle and documentation via the official service center portal.
  2. 2Schedule an appointment online or through a local Service Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
  3. 3Prepare the required documentation, including proof of ownership and identification.
  4. 4Bring the vehicle to the selected Service Center for a mandatory technical inspection if required by the specific renewal category.
  5. 5Pay the designated administrative fees at the center or via electronic payment services.
  6. 6Submit the application and collect the new registration certificate once processing is complete.

What to bring

  • Valid passport of the owner
  • Tax identification number (RNOKPP)
  • Existing vehicle registration certificate
  • Proof of legal ownership or a notarized power of attorney if acting on behalf of the owner
  • Inspection certificate if a technical examination is required

Fees are set by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and vary based on the type of vehicle and the registration service performed; these should be confirmed directly on the official Ministry of Internal Affairs website or at a service center terminal.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure all existing traffic fines are paid, as outstanding debts can prevent the processing of registration documents.
  • Verify that the engine number and chassis identification match the records exactly; discrepancies require additional forensic verification.
  • Check if the vehicle is subject to any legal encumbrances or bans on registration actions before visiting the center.
