Residence permit renewal in Ukraine

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with State Migration Service of Ukraine (Державна міграційна служба України).

Renewing a temporary residence permit in Ukraine generally involves preparing the necessary documents and submitting an application to the State Migration Service before the current permit expires. The process ensures legal continued stay in the country.

Your timing

It is generally advisable to initiate the renewal process well in advance of the permit's expiration date, typically at least 15 business days, but no earlier than one month. This allows time for gathering documents, scheduling appointments, and accounting for processing times, as permits cannot be renewed after they expire.

Start 15 days ahead

The application must be submitted no later than 15 business days before the expiration of the current temporary residence permit. However, it cannot be submitted earlier than one month before expiration.

The process

  1. 1Gather all required documents, including the existing temporary residence permit, passport, and documents confirming the grounds for renewal.
  2. 2Pay the state duty and administrative service fee at a bank.
  3. 3Submit the complete application package and receipts to the territorial unit of the State Migration Service of Ukraine at the place of residence.
  4. 4Undergo verification of submitted documents and data.
  5. 5Receive notification regarding the decision on the renewal of the temporary residence permit.
  6. 6Collect the new temporary residence permit once it is issued.

What to bring

  • Passport document of a foreigner or stateless person (with a copy and certified translation if required).
  • Existing temporary residence permit.
  • Document confirming the grounds for issuing a temporary residence permit (e.g., employment contract, marriage certificate, study confirmation, family reunion documents, investment documents) — original and copy.
  • Receipts for payment of state duty and administrative service fee.
  • Health insurance policy (unless exempted by law).
  • One matte photograph (3.5 x 4.5 cm).
  • Document confirming the availability of sufficient financial support (if applicable).
  • For certain categories, additional documents may be required (e.g., certificate of no criminal record for some types of permits, or notarized consent from a property owner for residence registration).

The cost typically includes an administrative service fee and a state duty. Specific amounts should be confirmed with the State Migration Service or found on their official website, as fees can be subject to change.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure all supporting documents are valid and correctly translated/certified where necessary, as incomplete applications can lead to delays or refusal.
  • Submit the application within the specified timeframe (no earlier than one month, no later than 15 business days before expiration); applications submitted outside this window may be rejected.
  • Verify the specific grounds for your permit renewal and gather all corresponding documents, as requirements can vary depending on the basis for residency (e.g., employment, marriage, study).
  • Be aware that an expired temporary residence permit cannot be renewed, and legal consequences may arise for overstaying.
