Passport renewal in Ukraine

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Державна міграційна служба України (State Migration Service of Ukraine) or diplomatic/consular institutions abroad..

Renewing a Ukrainian passport typically involves applying for a new biometric passport. This process generally requires submitting an application and supporting documents in person at a designated authority, often involving capturing biometric data.

Your timing

It is advisable to initiate the passport renewal process several months before the current passport's expiration date. This allows ample time to secure an appointment, account for potential processing delays, and ensures continuous travel eligibility.

Start 90 days ahead

This lead time accounts for typical processing periods (standard or expedited), potential delays in securing an appointment, and the time needed to gather necessary documents.

The process

  1. 1Locate the nearest State Migration Service office in Ukraine or a Ukrainian diplomatic/consular institution if abroad.
  2. 2Schedule an appointment, if required, for submitting the application.
  3. 3Prepare all necessary documents, including the expiring passport, internal passport (ID card), and tax identification number.
  4. 4Visit the chosen institution in person to submit the application, provide biometric data (fingerprints), and have a digital photo taken.
  5. 5Pay the administrative fees.
  6. 6Track the application status online, if available.
  7. 7Collect the new passport once it is ready, typically upon presentation of proof of identity and the old passport.

What to bring

  • Passport for travel abroad (the expiring one)
  • Internal passport of a citizen of Ukraine (e.g., ID card or old-style passport book)
  • Taxpayer identification number (TIN) / Registration number of the taxpayer's accounting card
  • Documents confirming changes in personal data (e.g., marriage certificate, divorce certificate, name change certificate), if applicable
  • Documents confirming the payment of administrative fees

Who handles it

The cost of a new passport consists of administrative service fees and the cost of the passport form. As of early 2024, for processing within 20 working days, the total is approximately 958 UAH. For expedited processing within 7 or 3 working days, the total is approximately 1598 UAH. These fees should be confirmed directly with the State Migration Service or the relevant consular institution, as they are subject to change.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Processing times can vary significantly depending on the volume of applications and the specific office or consulate. Always confirm current processing times.
  • Ensure all required documents are original and valid; photocopies might also be needed.
  • If applying abroad, consular offices may have specific additional requirements or different fee structures.
  • Some regions or consular services may require prior online registration or appointment booking before visiting.
