Motor insurance renewal in Hong Kong

How to renew motor insurance — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 2 September 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Insurance Authority (保險業監管局).

Renewing motor insurance in Hong Kong involves selecting a policy from an authorized insurer, typically followed by the issuance of a cover note or certificate. Once renewed, the information is usually transmitted to the Transport Department to ensure the vehicle remains legally compliant for registration purposes.

Your timing

Most motorists begin the renewal process at least 30 days before their current policy expires. This allows time for comparing quotes, ensuring the insurer updates the Transport Department's database, and avoiding any gap in mandatory coverage.

Start 30 days ahead

Processing time is generally short, but sufficient time is required to ensure that the new policy details are correctly registered and reflected for vehicle licensing requirements.

The process

  1. 1Contact an authorized motor insurer or a licensed insurance broker to request a renewal quote.
  2. 2Review the terms of the policy to ensure it meets the minimum third-party risk requirements under the Motor Vehicles Insurance (Third Party Risks) Ordinance.
  3. 3Complete the application and provide any requested details regarding the vehicle and the driver's history.
  4. 4Pay the insurance premium to the insurer.
  5. 5Receive the new certificate of insurance and verify that the insurer has recorded the updated policy details with the Transport Department.

What to bring

  • Existing certificate of insurance
  • Vehicle Registration Document
  • Driver's information and claim history records (No Claim Discount proof)
  • Identity documentation for the policyholder

Who handles it

Fees vary significantly based on the insurer, the driver's profile, the vehicle model, and the coverage level (Third Party vs. Comprehensive); confirm exact pricing directly with insurance providers.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure the insurance provider is authorized to conduct business in Hong Kong.
  • Check that the vehicle registration marks on the insurance certificate exactly match the Vehicle Registration Document.
  • Verify that the policy cover dates align with the vehicle license expiration to avoid gaps in mandatory coverage.
