Motor insurance renewal in France

How to renew motor insurance — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 31 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Autorité de contrôle prudentiel et de résolution (ACPR - Prudential Supervision and Resolution Authority).

Renewing motor insurance in France typically involves confirming the current contract details and confirming the terms for the following period. Insurance contracts in France generally renew automatically by tacit agreement unless the policyholder provides notice of termination within the legally defined window.

Your timing

It is common practice to review insurance terms at least 30 to 60 days before the annual renewal date to allow sufficient time for comparing quotes if a change of provider is desired.

Start 30 days ahead

Under the Châtel Law, insurers must notify policyholders of their right not to renew the contract, which typically triggers a notice period of at least 15 days before the renewal date.

The process

  1. 1Review the 'avis d'échéance' (renewal notice) sent by the current insurer.
  2. 2Verify the updated premium amount and any changes to the coverage levels or terms.
  3. 3Decide whether to accept the automatic renewal or terminate the policy.
  4. 4If choosing to terminate, send a notice of cancellation via registered mail if required by the contract terms, or electronically if the insurer permits.
  5. 5If switching insurers, the new provider may handle the transfer process on the policyholder's behalf under the Hamon Law (for contracts older than one year).

What to bring

  • Current insurance certificate or policy number
  • Registration certificate of the vehicle (certificat d'immatriculation)
  • Proof of driving history (relevé d'informations)

Premiums are determined by the insurer based on risk factors; confirm specific costs by reviewing the renewal notice or requesting a quote directly from the insurer.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Failure to cancel within the legal window results in an automatic renewal of the policy.
  • Not updating the insurer regarding changes in vehicle usage or driver status can affect claim settlements.
  • Missing the renewal notice deadline can lead to complications if seeking to switch providers.
