Vehicle inspection renewal in France

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Ministère de la Transition écologique (Ministry of Ecological Transition).

Renewing a vehicle inspection in France, known as the 'Contrôle Technique', involves undergoing a periodic safety check at an authorized private testing center. The inspection assesses the mechanical state and safety features of the vehicle to ensure it meets mandatory national standards.

Your timing

Most owners begin scheduling their appointment several weeks before the expiry date on their current inspection report to account for potential repairs. If a vehicle fails the inspection, a re-inspection must be completed within two months of the initial test.

Start 30 days ahead

Booking at least one month in advance ensures availability at the preferred testing center and provides a buffer for necessary mechanical repairs.

The process

  1. 1Locate an officially approved inspection center (centre de contrôle technique agréé).
  2. 2Schedule an appointment via phone or the center's online portal.
  3. 3Present the vehicle to the technician at the designated time.
  4. 4Receive the inspection report (procès-verbal) detailing the findings.
  5. 5If required, perform necessary repairs and return for a follow-up inspection (contre-visite) within the mandated timeframe.

What to bring

  • Certificat d'immatriculation (Vehicle Registration Document / Carte Grise)
  • Proof of identity
  • Existing inspection report (for follow-up checks)

Fees are not fixed by the government and vary significantly by center, region, and vehicle type; confirming the price at the time of booking is recommended.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Failing to undergo the inspection on time can result in a fine and potential vehicle impoundment.
  • The 'contre-visite' (re-inspection) must be performed within two months of the initial failure to avoid starting the full inspection process over.
  • Ensure the vehicle's registration document (Carte Grise) is original and current before arriving at the center.
