How to renew motor insurance — how it works anywhere

Renewing motor insurance in Spain typically involves confirming coverage terms with the existing insurer or selecting a new provider. Policies are usually annual contracts that renew automatically unless the policyholder provides formal notice of cancellation within the timeframe stipulated by the insurer.

Your timing

It is standard practice to review insurance renewal notices at least one month before the policy expiration date. This allows sufficient time to compare quotes from other providers or negotiate terms with the current company, as Spanish law often requires notice of non-renewal to be provided to the insurer at least one month in advance.

Start 30 days ahead

Most insurers require at least 30 days' notice for non-renewal of an annual policy.

The process

  1. 1Review the renewal notice provided by the current insurance company to check for any changes in premiums or coverage.
  2. 2Verify the current policy's terms and the specific deadline for providing notice of non-renewal.
  3. 3Decide whether to accept the renewal offer or seek alternative coverage from another insurer.
  4. 4If switching, notify the current insurer in writing within the required notice period to prevent automatic renewal.
  5. 5Ensure the new policy is active before the current one expires to maintain continuous coverage as required by law.
  6. 6Update vehicle documentation if necessary to ensure it reflects the new insurance details.

What to bring

  • Vehicle registration document (Permiso de Circulación)
  • Valid driver's license
  • Technical inspection card (ITV) showing the current status of the vehicle
  • Current insurance policy or renewal notification

Insurance premiums in Spain vary significantly based on the driver's history, vehicle type, and selected coverage level; specific costs must be confirmed by obtaining a quote directly from an insurance provider.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Missing the notice period for non-renewal can lead to the automatic extension of the existing contract.
  • Failure to maintain at least third-party liability insurance (Seguro de Responsabilidad Civil) is illegal and subject to fines.
  • Providing inaccurate information regarding driving history or vehicle usage can invalidate a claim.
