Residence permit renewal in Hong Kong

How to renew a residence permit — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 3 September 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Immigration Department (入境事務處).

Renewing a Hong Kong residence permit, officially known as a 'visa for extension of stay,' involves submitting an application to the Immigration Department to extend one's permitted duration of stay. Applicants must demonstrate that they continue to meet the original requirements for their specific entry category.

Your timing

Most applicants are encouraged to submit their extension requests within four weeks before their current limit of stay expires. Processing times can vary, so initiating the application early helps avoid the risk of overstaying while the application is under review.

Start 28 days ahead

The Immigration Department generally accepts extension applications within four weeks of the expiry date to ensure continuity of stay.

The process

  1. 1Verify the specific extension criteria based on the current category of stay (e.g., employment, study, or dependants).
  2. 2Prepare the required application forms, which vary depending on the category of stay.
  3. 3Gather supporting documentation, such as proof of employment, enrolment in an educational institution, or proof of relationship.
  4. 4Submit the application via the Immigration Department's online portal, by post, or in person at the Immigration Tower.
  5. 5Attend an appointment if requested by the Immigration Department to finalize the application.
  6. 6Collect the extension label once the application is approved.

What to bring

  • Valid travel document (passport)
  • Current Hong Kong identity card
  • Completed application form for the specific category
  • Supporting letters or contracts relevant to the extension
  • Proof of financial status or residential address if requested

A fee is payable upon the collection of the extension label; current fee structures should be verified directly via the Immigration Department's official website.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Failing to submit the application before the current limit of stay expires may result in an overstaying violation.
  • Providing incomplete documentation or unsigned forms will delay the processing time.
  • Ensure that the purpose of the stay remains consistent with the conditions granted during the initial entry.
  • Travel outside of Hong Kong while an application for an extension is pending may lead to the cancellation of the application.
