Residence permit renewal in Brazil

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Polícia Federal (Federal Police).

Renewing a Brazilian residence permit, known as the Carteira de Registro Nacional Migratório (CRNM), typically involves requesting an extension of the residence period or transforming the temporary residence into permanent status. The process is managed by the Federal Police and requires submitting an application, supporting documents, and paying relevant fees.

Your timing

It is generally advisable for individuals to begin the renewal process several months before their current residence permit's expiration date. This allows ample time to gather all necessary documents, schedule appointments with the Federal Police, and account for potential processing delays.

Start 120 days ahead

This lead time accounts for the time needed to collect documents, schedule an appointment with the Federal Police (which can have waiting lists), and the processing time for the application itself.

The process

  1. 1Identify the specific legal basis for the residence permit extension or transformation.
  2. 2Gather all required documents, including forms, identification, proof of means, and any specific documents related to the residence basis.
  3. 3Fill out the electronic application form (Solicitação de Registro Nacional Migratório ou Prorrogação do Prazo de Estada) available on the Federal Police website.
  4. 4Pay the applicable fees (Guia de Recolhimento da União - GRU) and keep the payment receipts.
  5. 5Schedule an appointment online with the Federal Police unit responsible for migrant services in the individual's municipality of residence.
  6. 6Attend the scheduled appointment at the Federal Police, bringing all original documents and their copies, and the GRU payment receipts.
  7. 7Await the analysis and decision from the Federal Police. The status can often be monitored online.

Fees, known as 'Guia de Recolhimento da União' (GRU), are typically required for the issuance of the CRNM and for processing the application. The exact amounts vary and should be confirmed on the Federal Police website or during the application process, as they can change.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensuring all required documents are up-to-date and correctly translated into Portuguese by a sworn translator if not originally in Portuguese.
  • Paying the correct GRU fees; incorrect payments can cause delays.
  • Scheduling an appointment well in advance, as availability can be limited, especially in larger cities.
  • Understanding the specific legal basis for residence, as required documents and procedures can differ significantly based on the type of residence permit (e.g., work, family reunification, investment).
