National ID card renewal in Hong Kong

How to renew a national ID card — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 2 September 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with 入境事務處 (Immigration Department).

Renewing a Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card involves applying through the Immigration Department, either online or in person at a Registration of Persons Office. The process typically requires verifying current information, providing biometric data, and collecting the new smart identity card.

Your timing

Applicants are generally advised to begin the renewal process at least 4 to 8 weeks before the intended date of travel or the expiration of a current card, as appointment slots can fill up quickly and processing times may be affected by seasonal demand.

Start 28 days ahead

Booking an appointment online is required for most applicants, and popular office locations may have lead times of several weeks.

The process

  1. 1Check eligibility for renewal through the Immigration Department's official website.
  2. 2Book an appointment online or via the mobile application to visit a Registration of Persons Office.
  3. 3Complete the application form provided by the Immigration Department.
  4. 4Attend the appointment in person to provide biometric data and have a new photograph taken.
  5. 5Receive a notification to collect the new identity card at the designated office.
  6. 6Collect the card in person and surrender the old identity card for cancellation.

What to bring

  • Existing Hong Kong Identity Card
  • Completed application form
  • Proof of identity or supporting documents if requested during the appointment booking process

What commonly goes wrong

  • Failure to attend a booked appointment without prior notification may affect future scheduling.
  • Ensure all personal information provided matches government records exactly to prevent processing delays.
  • The physical collection of the new card must be done in person by the applicant.
