National ID card renewal in South Africa

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Department of Home Affairs (DHA).

Renewing a South African National ID card, also known as applying for a reissuance, typically involves visiting a Department of Home Affairs (DHA) office or an participating bank branch. The process requires submitting an application, providing biometric data, and paying a reissuance fee.

Your timing

It is generally advisable to apply for a replacement ID card as soon as the need arises, as processing times can vary. While exact timelines are subject to change, applicants might consider initiating the process several weeks or even months before they anticipate needing the updated card, particularly if relying on specific identification for official purposes.

Start 14 days ahead

Processing times for smart ID cards can vary, but the Department of Home Affairs often aims for collection within 10-14 working days for applications submitted at a DHA office, and sometimes quicker at bank branches. This is an estimated timeframe and not a guarantee.

The process

  1. 1Locate a Department of Home Affairs (DHA) office or an accredited bank branch offering Smart ID card services.
  2. 2Complete the application form for a Smart ID card reissuance. Some branches may offer pre-application online.
  3. 3Submit your fingerprints and have your photograph taken digitally at the office or bank branch.
  4. 4Pay the prescribed reissuance fee.
  5. 5Receive a receipt with a tracking number.
  6. 6Track the status of your application online via the DHA website or SMS services, if available.
  7. 7Collect your new Smart ID card from the office or bank branch where you applied, typically upon presentation of your receipt and old ID card.

What to bring

  • Your current green barcoded ID book or Smart ID card (if applying for a replacement due to damage or updates)
  • Proof of payment for the reissuance fee
  • Any relevant supporting documents, such as a police report if the ID was lost, or a marriage certificate for a name change (these specific requirements should be confirmed with DHA)

A fee is typically charged for the reissuance of a Smart ID card. As of recent information, this fee is usually R140, but applicants should confirm the current amount directly with the Department of Home Affairs or the applying bank branch.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Confirm the operating hours and specific services offered by your chosen DHA office or bank branch, as not all branches may handle ID card applications.
  • Ensure all necessary supporting documents, such as proof of loss or marital status changes, are confirmed and prepared before your visit.
  • Be aware that processing times can fluctuate, and it is prudent to track your application status regularly.
