Travel visa renewal in South Africa

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Department of Home Affairs (DHA), Republic of South Africa.

Renewing a South African travel visa typically involves submitting an application to the Department of Home Affairs before the current visa expires. This process ensures legal continued stay in the country.

Your timing

It is generally advisable to initiate the visa renewal process at least 60 days before the current visa's expiration date. This allows ample time for processing, which can sometimes take several weeks or months, and helps avoid complications or overstay penalties.

Start 60 days ahead

To account for potential processing delays and appointment waiting times, and to avoid overstaying the current visa.

The process

  1. 1Determine the correct visa category for the desired continued stay in South Africa.
  2. 2Gather all required supporting documentation, ensuring they are valid and complete.
  3. 3Complete the relevant visa application form, such as Form BI-84.
  4. 4Pay the prescribed application fee, typically online or at a designated office.
  5. 5Submit the application and supporting documents at a VFS Global office or designated Department of Home Affairs office within South Africa, or at a South African mission abroad if applying from outside the country.
  6. 6Attend any scheduled interviews or provide additional information if requested by the DHA.
  7. 7Await notification of the application's outcome and collect the new visa or outcome letter.

What to bring

  • Valid passport with at least one blank page and validity extending beyond the intended stay.
  • Current South African visa.
  • Completed application form (e.g., Form BI-84).
  • Proof of financial means to support the extended stay.
  • Proof of accommodation in South Africa.
  • Medical and/or radiological reports, if required for the visa type.
  • Police clearance certificate(s) from relevant countries, if required.
  • Motivation letter explaining the reason for the renewal.
  • Return or onward flight ticket (or proof of funds to purchase one).

Visa application fees are subject to change and vary depending on the visa category. These fees are payable to the Department of Home Affairs or its designated service provider (e.g., VFS Global) at the time of application.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure the application is submitted before the current visa expires to avoid being declared an undesirable person or facing penalties for overstaying.
  • Verify all required documents are complete and certified where necessary, as incomplete applications can lead to significant delays or rejection.
  • The specific requirements and processing times can vary based on the type of visa being renewed and the applicant's nationality.
  • Applications submitted within South Africa are generally processed through VFS Global, which charges an additional service fee.
