Passport renewal in Hong Kong

How to renew a passport — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 1 September 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with 入境事務處 (Immigration Department).

Renewing a Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) passport involves submitting an application through the Immigration Department, either online, via drop-in boxes, or by post. The process entails providing a recent photograph, identity documentation, and the required fee to receive a new travel document.

Your timing

Applicants are typically advised to begin the renewal process at least 4 to 6 weeks before travel plans, accounting for potential processing delays and the time required for mail or appointment scheduling.

Start 35 days ahead

Standard processing time for an HKSAR passport is generally 5 to 10 working days after the receipt of all required documents, plus mailing time.

The process

  1. 1Prepare the required application form (ID 841) or access the online application portal via the GovHK website.
  2. 2Ensure a suitable passport photograph is prepared according to the specific dimensional and background requirements set by the Immigration Department.
  3. 3Submit the application online, by post, via drop-in boxes located at immigration offices, or in person at a designated travel document office.
  4. 4Pay the application fee using the approved payment methods, such as credit card for online applications or cheque for postal applications.
  5. 5Collect the new passport in person at the selected immigration office upon receiving notification that the document is ready.

What to bring

  • Completed application form (if not applying online)
  • Recent passport photograph
  • Current HKSAR passport
  • Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card
  • Proof of payment

Who handles it

Fees vary based on the validity period (10 years for persons aged 16 and above, 5 years for children under 16) and the number of pages requested; exact figures should be confirmed on the official Immigration Department fee schedule.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure the photograph meets exact technical specifications, as non-compliant photos will delay processing.
  • Verify that the digital or physical signature matches the applicant's official records.
  • Double-check that all required supporting documents are included in the postal submission to avoid rejection.
