Passport renewal in Vanuatu

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Department of Immigration & Passport Services (Vanuatu).

Renewing a Vanuatu passport generally involves submitting an application form, required documents, and a fee to the Department of Immigration & Passport Services. The process can be done within Vanuatu or through its diplomatic missions abroad.

Your timing

Most applicants are advised to initiate the passport renewal process several months before their current passport's expiry date. This allows ample time for processing, which can sometimes extend due to demand or administrative procedures, and to secure appointments if required by diplomatic missions.

Start 60 days ahead

This estimate accounts for potential processing times within the Department of Immigration & Passport Services, as well as mailing time if applying from overseas or through a diplomatic mission. Actual processing times can vary.

The process

  1. 1Obtain the passport application form from the Department of Immigration & Passport Services or a Vanuatu diplomatic mission/consulate.
  2. 2Complete the application form accurately and in full.
  3. 3Gather all required supporting documents, such as previous passport, birth certificate, and proof of citizenship.
  4. 4Obtain new passport photos that meet the specified requirements.
  5. 5Pay the applicable passport renewal fee.
  6. 6Submit the completed application form, supporting documents, photos, and payment receipt to the Department of Immigration & Passport Services or the relevant diplomatic mission/consulate.
  7. 7Collect the new passport once processing is complete and notification is received.

Specific fees for passport renewal should be confirmed directly with the Department of Immigration & Passport Services or the relevant Vanuatu diplomatic mission, as these can vary and are subject to change. Fees are typically payable in Vanuatu Vatu (VUV) within Vanuatu, or local currency equivalent at diplomatic missions.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure all required supporting documents are original or certified copies, as specified by the authority.
  • Passport photos must strictly adhere to the stated specifications; improperly sized or formatted photos are a common reason for application delays.
  • Applicants residing abroad should confirm specific submission procedures, payment methods, and document verification requirements with their nearest Vanuatu High Commission or Embassy.
  • Verify the current processing times and any holiday closures that might affect the renewal schedule.
