Vehicle registration renewal in Cyprus

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Department of Road Transport (Τμήμα Οδικών Μεταφορών - TOM).

Renewing a vehicle registration in Cyprus involves ensuring the vehicle has passed its MOT and is insured, then paying the annual road tax to the Department of Road Transport. The process can often be completed online or through authorized service centers.

Your timing

It is advisable for vehicle owners to initiate the renewal process a few weeks before the registration expiry date. This allows sufficient time to schedule an MOT inspection if needed, arrange insurance, and complete the road tax payment, avoiding potential late fees or issues with driving an unregistered vehicle.

Start 30 days ahead

This accounts for potential lead times for scheduling an MOT test, obtaining or renewing insurance, and allowing for processing time if renewing through a non-online method.

The process

  1. 1Ensure the vehicle has a valid certificate of roadworthiness (MOT certificate) from an authorized MOT center. The MOT must be valid for the period the registration is being renewed.
  2. 2Obtain or renew vehicle insurance from a licensed insurance provider in Cyprus. The insurance must be valid for the entire period of the road tax renewal.
  3. 3Pay the annual road tax. This can often be done online through the official JCC Smart portal, via commercial banks, or at Citizen Service Centers (KEP) and District Post Offices.
  4. 4Upon successful payment and verification of MOT and insurance, the vehicle registration is considered renewed. A physical document may not always be issued immediately if renewed online, as authorities typically have digital records.

What to bring

  • Vehicle Registration Certificate (Log Book)

The cost of road tax varies significantly based on factors such as the vehicle's engine capacity (CC), CO2 emissions, and age. Owners should confirm the exact fee for their specific vehicle through the JCC Smart portal or by consulting the Department of Road Transport's tariff tables. Late renewal incurs additional penalties.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Driving with expired road tax, MOT, or insurance can lead to significant fines and penalties.
  • Ensure all details on the MOT certificate and insurance policy match the vehicle's registration certificate.
  • Online payment portals may have specific operating hours or require registration for first-time users.
