Vehicle inspection renewal in Cyprus

How to renew a vehicle inspection — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 2 September 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Department of Transport / Τμήμα Οδικών Μεταφορών (TOM).

Renewing a vehicle inspection in Cyprus, known as the MOT test, involves taking the vehicle to an authorized private inspection center to ensure it meets safety and environmental standards. Upon passing, the inspection center updates the data in the government system, which allows for the subsequent renewal of the road tax.

Your timing

It is generally recommended to schedule an appointment at least two weeks before the current inspection certificate expires. This accounts for potential waiting times at testing centers and ensures there is enough buffer to complete any necessary repairs if the vehicle fails the initial inspection.

Start 14 days ahead

Allows time for booking, potential re-inspection, and clearing minor faults.

The process

  1. 1Verify the inspection due date for the vehicle.
  2. 2Contact an authorized private vehicle inspection center (MOT center) to book an appointment.
  3. 3Present the vehicle at the chosen center for the technical inspection.
  4. 4Pay the inspection fee directly to the center.
  5. 5Ensure the center enters the successful inspection result into the Department of Transport's digital system.
  6. 6Proceed to renew the road tax through the Department of Transport portal once the inspection status is updated.

What to bring

  • Vehicle registration certificate (Registration Document)
  • Valid identity card or passport of the person presenting the vehicle
  • Proof of valid insurance

Fees for MOT inspections are set by the government; currently, the maximum fee is 35 Euros, but applicants should confirm the exact current rate with their chosen inspection center.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Driving with an expired MOT certificate may result in fines or issues with insurance coverage.
  • Ensure the vehicle is free of obvious mechanical issues, such as faulty lights or worn tires, prior to the appointment to avoid failing the test.
  • Failure to pass the inspection requires repairs and a subsequent re-inspection within a specified timeframe to avoid additional fees.
