Passport renewal in Bangladesh

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Department of Immigration and Passports (বহিরাগমন ও পাসপোর্ট অধিদপ্তর).

Renewing a Bangladeshi passport involves applying for a reissuance through the Department of Immigration and Passports, typically transitioning to an e-Passport if the applicant currently holds a machine-readable passport. The process requires submitting an online application, completing biometric enrollment at a local office, and providing documentation verifying identity and citizenship.

Your timing

Most applicants initiate the renewal process at least 6 to 9 months before the current document expires. This buffer accounts for potential administrative delays, high demand for biometric appointment slots, and varying local processing times.

Start 90 days ahead

While standard processing may take several weeks, administrative backlogs or verification requirements can extend the timeline, making early submission advisable.

The process

  1. 1Visit the official e-Passport portal to complete the online application form.
  2. 2Select the appropriate service type, such as 'Re-issue' for existing passport holders.
  3. 3Pay the required passport fee via designated banks or mobile payment methods as indicated on the portal.
  4. 4Schedule an appointment for biometric enrollment (fingerprints, iris scan, and photograph) at the nearest Regional Passport Office or Embassy.
  5. 5Attend the appointment in person with all original documents and a printed copy of the application summary.
  6. 6Track the application status online and collect the new passport once notified of its readiness.

What to bring

  • Printed and signed application summary
  • Current passport with a photocopy of the data page
  • National ID card or Birth Registration Certificate
  • Proof of payment (bank challan or online payment receipt)
  • Professional certificates or NOC for specific occupations (if applicable)

Fees vary based on the number of pages, the duration of validity (5 or 10 years), and the chosen delivery speed (Regular, Express, or Super Express). These fees are listed on the official e-Passport portal and should be confirmed at the time of payment.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Discrepancies between the information on the passport and the National ID card can cause significant processing delays.
  • Failure to update marital or professional status details during the renewal process may lead to application rejection.
  • Payment receipts must be kept as they are often required at the biometric appointment to verify the transaction.
