Motor insurance renewal in Bangladesh

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA) / বীমা উন্নয়ন ও নিয়ন্ত্রণ কর্তৃপক্ষ. Rules here vary, so check carefully.

Renewing motor insurance in Bangladesh involves updating the policy coverage for a vehicle to ensure continued legal compliance under the Motor Vehicles Ordinance. This process typically requires submitting vehicle registration documents and the previous policy to an authorized insurance provider for validation.

Your timing

It is standard practice to begin the renewal process at least 15 to 30 days before the existing policy expires. This buffer accounts for administrative processing times and helps avoid any gaps in coverage, which are prohibited by law.

Start 30 days ahead

Early application helps ensure that the documentation reaches the insurer and the policy is updated in the central system without a coverage lapse.

The process

  1. 1Contact an authorized general insurance company in Bangladesh to request a renewal quote.
  2. 2Submit the required vehicle documentation and the previous insurance certificate for verification.
  3. 3Pay the applicable premium, which is determined based on the vehicle type, engine capacity, and coverage limits.
  4. 4Receive the new insurance certificate and the cover note.
  5. 5Ensure that the updated insurance information is updated in the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) system if required.

What to bring

  • Original copy of the previous motor insurance policy
  • Vehicle Registration Certificate (Blue Book)
  • Engine and chassis number details
  • Proof of identity or business registration documents for the vehicle owner

Fees are set by the Tariff Committee under the IDRA regulations; check the current premium structure directly with an authorized insurance provider as rates vary by vehicle classification.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Failing to renew before the expiry date can lead to legal penalties and issues with vehicle fitness certification.
  • Ensure the insurance provider is licensed by the IDRA to avoid invalid coverage.
  • Check that the vehicle description on the new certificate exactly matches the BRTA registration details.
