Residence permit renewal in Türkiye

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Directorate General of Migration Management (Göç İdaresi Başkanlığı).

Renewing a Turkish residence permit generally involves submitting an online application, preparing required documents, and attending a scheduled interview or submitting documents by post. The process is managed by the Directorate General of Migration Management (Göç İdaresi Başkanlığı).

Your timing

It is advisable for applicants to begin the renewal process within 60 days before their current permit expires. This timeframe accounts for potential processing delays, appointment availability, and ensures continuity of legal residency.

Start 60 days ahead

Applicants are generally advised to apply for renewal up to 60 days before their current residence permit expires, to allow for application processing and potential appointment scheduling.

The process

  1. 1Complete the online renewal application form on the official e-ikamet website, selecting 'Extension Application'.
  2. 2Gather all required documents, ensuring they are current and complete, including a valid passport, previous residence permit, biometric photos, and proof of sufficient financial means and health insurance.
  3. 3Pay the required residence permit fee and card fee, typically through designated banks or tax offices.
  4. 4Depending on the application type and location, either mail the complete document file to the Directorate General of Migration Management or attend a scheduled appointment at a provincial Directorate of Migration Management (İl Göç İdaresi Müdürlüğü) with the required documents.
  5. 5Track the application status online and await notification regarding the outcome and delivery of the new residence permit card.

What to bring

  • Application form printout signed by the applicant or legal representative
  • Photocopy of the passport or travel document (pages with identity information, photo, entry/exit stamps, and validity dates)
  • Four biometric photographs taken within the last six months (with a white background)
  • Original and photocopy of the previous residence permit card
  • Proof of sufficient and sustainable financial resources for the duration of stay (e.g., bank statements, salary slips)
  • Valid health insurance policy covering the duration of the requested permit
  • Documentation supporting the reason for residence (e.g., student certificate, employment letter, property deed, rental agreement, marriage certificate)
  • Document showing payment of the residence permit fee and card fee

The cost for renewing a residence permit typically includes a permit fee (which can vary based on nationality and duration) and a separate card fee. These fees are usually paid in Turkish Lira (TL) at designated banks or tax offices. Current fee amounts should be confirmed during the online application process or with the Directorate General of Migration Management.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure all submitted documents are accurate, up-to-date, and notarized or officially translated if required, as incorrect documentation is a common reason for application rejection.
  • Do not allow the current residence permit to expire before submitting the renewal application; applying within the legal window is crucial.
  • Keep records of all payments and submitted documents, as these may be required for follow-up or in case of issues.
  • Health insurance policies must meet specific requirements, including coverage duration and scope; confirm these details before purchasing or renewing a policy.
