Work permit renewal in Russia
Renewing a Russian work permit typically involves submitting an application and required documents to the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) before the current permit expires. The process ensures continued legal employment for foreign nationals in Russia.
It is generally advisable for individuals to begin the work permit renewal process several months before their current permit's expiration. This allows sufficient time to gather all necessary documents, secure appointments if required, and account for the processing period, which can vary but often takes several weeks.
Start 90 days ahead
This lead time accounts for the typical processing duration of 10-15 business days after submission, plus time needed to gather documents, undergo medical examinations, and potential appointment scheduling. Starting earlier provides a buffer for unexpected delays.
The process
- 1Ensure the employer has a valid permit to attract and use foreign workers, if applicable.
- 2Undergo a mandatory medical examination to obtain a certificate confirming absence of certain diseases, if required for the renewal.
- 3Prepare all necessary documents, including the application form, passport, current work permit, migration card, registration, medical certificates, and photographs.
- 4Pay the state duty (fee) for the renewal of the work permit.
- 5Submit the complete application package and supporting documents to the local department of the General Directorate for Migration Affairs (GUVM) of the MIA.
- 6Await processing of the application by the MIA.
- 7Collect the renewed work permit once approved.

- Labor contract or civil law contract for the performance of work (provision of services)

Who handles it
Министерство внутренних дел Российской Федерации (Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation - MIA)
The state duty for renewing a work permit is specified by Russian tax legislation. Applicants should confirm the current fee amount with the Ministry of Internal Affairs or through official government portals, as it may be subject to change.
What commonly goes wrong
- Incomplete documentation is a common reason for application rejection; ensure all forms are correctly filled out and all required documents are present and valid.
- The medical examination and certificates have a limited validity period, typically 3 months, so these should be obtained close to the application submission date.
- Ensure the employer's permit to attract foreign labor is valid, as its absence can hinder the renewal process.
- Adhere strictly to deadlines; applying after the current permit expires can lead to complications and potential penalties.
