Motor insurance renewal in Russia

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Банк России (Bank of Russia), Российский союз автостраховщиков (Russian Association of Motor Insurers - RSA).

Renewing motor insurance (OSAGO) in Russia involves contacting an insurance company, providing updated vehicle and driver information, and paying the premium to receive a new insurance policy. This policy is mandatory for all vehicle owners.

Your timing

Most people typically start the renewal process 2-4 weeks before their current policy expires. This allows sufficient time to compare offers from different insurance companies, gather necessary documents, and account for any processing delays, ensuring continuous legal coverage.

Start 21 days ahead

This lead time allows for comparing insurance offers, submitting documents, and processing the new policy before the old one expires, preventing a lapse in coverage.

The process

  1. 1Review current insurance policy details and expiration date.
  2. 2Contact current or other preferred insurance companies to obtain new quotes for OSAGO.
  3. 3Provide updated vehicle information, driver details, and previous policy number if applicable.
  4. 4Compare offers, premiums, and terms from different insurers.
  5. 5Select an insurance company and pay the premium.
  6. 6Receive the new OSAGO policy, either in electronic format (e-OSAGO) or as a physical document.

What to bring

  • Vehicle registration certificate (Свидетельство о регистрации транспортного средства - СТС)
  • Vehicle passport (Паспорт транспортного средства - ПТС)
  • Driver's license(s) of all individuals to be insured
  • Passport of the vehicle owner
  • Previous OSAGO policy number (if renewing with the same insurer or for reference)

Who handles it

Банк России (Bank of Russia), Российский союз автостраховщиков (Russian Association of Motor Insurers - RSA)

The cost of OSAGO varies based on factors such as the vehicle's engine power, region of registration, driver's age and experience, and claims history (bonus-malus coefficient). Exact premiums must be calculated by the insurance company based on specific criteria.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure the insurance company is licensed by the Bank of Russia; check their license on the Bank of Russia's website or the RSA website.
  • Verify all provided information (vehicle data, driver data) is accurate on the new policy to avoid issues during claims or checks.
  • Understand the 'bonus-malus' coefficient (KBM), which can significantly affect your premium based on your claims history.
  • Be aware of fraudulent policies; check the validity of an electronic policy on the RSA website using its number.
