Vehicle inspection renewal in North Macedonia

Written from published rules on 26 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Министерство за внатрешни работи (Ministry of Internal Affairs) through authorized technical inspection stations.

Renewing a vehicle inspection in North Macedonia involves taking the vehicle to an authorized technical inspection station, where it undergoes a check to ensure it meets safety and environmental standards. Upon successful completion, a new inspection certificate is issued.

Your timing

Vehicle inspections are typically required annually, and it is advisable to schedule the inspection a few weeks before the expiry date of the current certificate. This allows ample time to book an appointment and address any potential issues identified during the inspection without driving with an expired certificate.

Start 14 days ahead

To allow for booking an appointment at a technical inspection station and to provide a buffer for any repairs that might be needed if the vehicle does not pass the initial inspection.

The process

  1. 1Locate an authorized technical inspection station (станица за технички преглед) in North Macedonia.
  2. 2Schedule an appointment for the vehicle inspection, if required by the station.
  3. 3Bring the vehicle and the necessary documents to the technical inspection station.
  4. 4The vehicle will undergo a thorough check of its technical condition, including brakes, steering, lights, emissions, and other safety components.
  5. 5If the vehicle passes the inspection, pay the fee and receive the new inspection certificate and a sticker for the windshield.
  6. 6If the vehicle fails the inspection, address the identified deficiencies and return for a re-inspection.

What to bring

  • Vehicle registration certificate (сообраќајна дозвола)
  • Proof of valid compulsory motor vehicle insurance (полиса за задолжително осигурување)
  • Previous technical inspection certificate (if available)

Who handles it

The fee for a technical inspection is set by regulation. Applicants should confirm the current fee directly with the chosen technical inspection station, as it may vary slightly between stations or based on vehicle type.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure all vehicle lights (headlights, tail lights, turn signals, brake lights) are functional.
  • Check tire condition, including tread depth and pressure, as worn tires are a common reason for failure.
  • Confirm that all required documents (registration, insurance) are current and valid.
  • Address any known mechanical issues or dashboard warning lights before the inspection.
