The process
- 1Identify the reason for a new card (e.g., loss, damage, correction of details, or obtaining the first adult NIC).
- 2Obtain the relevant application form (Form B) from a Divisional Secretariat, Grama Niladhari (village officer), or download it from the Department for Registration of Persons (DRP) website.
- 3Complete the application form accurately, providing all requested personal details.
- 4Obtain certification for the application from a Grama Niladhari (for general applications) or other designated certifying officers (e.g., school principal for first-time applicants, or a Divisional Secretary).
- 5Collect all necessary supporting documents, which may include birth certificate, old NIC (if available), marriage certificate (if applicable), and photographs.
- 6Submit the completed application form and supporting documents to the relevant Divisional Secretariat or directly to the DRP head office in Colombo, either in person or via registered post.
- 7Pay the prescribed fee for the service (standard or urgent, if applicable).
- 8Collect the new National Identity Card once it has been processed and issued by the DRP.
