Work permit renewal in Jamaica

Written from published rules on 26 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Ministry of Labour and Social Security (MLSS), Jamaica.

Renewing a work permit in Jamaica involves submitting an application to the Ministry of Labour and Social Security (MLSS) with updated information and supporting documents before the current permit expires. The process typically requires the employer to initiate the renewal.

Your timing

It is generally advisable to begin the renewal process at least two to three months before the current work permit expires. This allows sufficient time for application preparation, submission, and processing by the Ministry, which can take several weeks or longer, depending on case complexity and volume.

Start 60 days ahead

This lead time accounts for the preparation of all required documents, potential employer-side processing, and the Ministry's review and approval period for work permit renewals.

The process

  1. 1The employer prepares the renewal application, completing the official application form.
  2. 2The employer gathers all necessary supporting documents, including updated company registration, tax compliance, and the applicant's personal documents.
  3. 3The employer or a designated representative submits the completed application form and all supporting documents to the Ministry of Labour and Social Security's Work Permit Division.
  4. 4The Ministry reviews the application for completeness and compliance with current regulations.
  5. 5If additional information or clarification is needed, the Ministry will contact the employer.
  6. 6Upon approval, the work permit is renewed, and the employer is notified to collect the updated permit.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Incomplete applications are a common cause of delays; ensure all fields are filled and all required documents are attached.
  • Processing times can fluctuate; submitting the application well in advance of the expiry date is crucial.
  • Any changes in the applicant's role, employer details, or personal information since the last permit may require additional scrutiny or documentation.
  • Ensure the employer's Tax Compliance Certificate (TCC) is current and valid throughout the application process.
