Vehicle inspection renewal in Ecuador

How to renew a vehicle inspection — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 6 September 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Agencia Nacional de Tránsito (National Transit Agency) / Gobiernos Autónomos Descentralizados (Autonomous Decentralized Governments).

Renewing a vehicle inspection in Ecuador, known as 'Revisión Técnica Vehicular' (RTV), involves verifying the mechanical and safety condition of a vehicle. This mandatory process is required to update the vehicle's registration and permit it to circulate legally on public roads.

Your timing

It is recommended to initiate the process at least 30 to 60 days before the deadline determined by the license plate calendar. Appointment availability can decrease significantly as the end of the month approaches, and processing times may increase during peak periods.

Start 30 days ahead

This timeframe allows for potential mechanical repairs if the vehicle fails the initial inspection and requires a follow-up appointment.

The process

  1. 1Verify the official inspection schedule based on the last digit of the vehicle's license plate.
  2. 2Pay all outstanding transit fines and the mandatory vehicle registration fees through authorized banking channels.
  3. 3Schedule an inspection appointment through the website of the local municipality or transit authority managing the vehicle's registration.
  4. 4Bring the vehicle to the designated inspection center at the scheduled date and time.
  5. 5Obtain the inspection certificate if the vehicle passes; if it fails, complete necessary repairs and return for a re-inspection within the allowed grace period.

What to bring

  • Original vehicle registration document (Matrícula)
  • Proof of payment for the inspection fee
  • Proof of payment for outstanding transit fines
  • Current driver's license of the person presenting the vehicle

Who handles it

Fees for vehicle inspection vary by municipality and vehicle type; applicants should confirm the current tariff via their specific local transit authority website.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Failing to clear all outstanding traffic fines before the inspection appointment.
  • Attempting to inspect the vehicle outside of the assigned month based on the license plate calendar, which may incur additional penalties.
  • Arriving at the inspection center without the correct physical registration documents or proof of payment.
