Motor insurance renewal in Ecuador

How to renew motor insurance — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 3 September 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Superintendencia de Compañías, Valores y Seguros (Superintendency of Companies, Securities and Insurance).

Renewing motor insurance in Ecuador involves updating the mandatory annual policy, known as the SOAT (Seguro Obligatorio de Accidentes de Tránsito), or private supplemental coverage. The process typically requires verifying vehicle data and ensuring payments are up to date through authorized insurance providers.

Your timing

It is recommended to initiate the renewal process at least 30 days before the existing policy expires. This buffer accounts for potential administrative delays or system updates required for vehicle registration verification.

Start 30 days ahead

Early preparation helps ensure the vehicle remains compliant with mandatory transit regulations and avoids gaps in coverage.

The process

  1. 1Verify the current policy expiration date with the insurance provider.
  2. 2Select an authorized insurance company regulated by the Superintendencia de Compañías, Valores y Seguros.
  3. 3Submit the vehicle registration documents and owner identification to the chosen provider.
  4. 4Pay the applicable premium, which varies based on the vehicle type and coverage levels.
  5. 5Receive the updated digital or physical insurance certificate and verify that the data matches the vehicle's registration document (Matrícula).

What to bring

  • Valid vehicle registration document (Matrícula)
  • Owner's identity document (Cédula de identidad or passport)
  • Proof of previous insurance (if applicable)
  • Vehicle inspection certificate (if required by the specific provider)

Fees are determined by individual insurance providers based on vehicle classification and the extent of coverage; confirm current rates directly with your chosen insurer.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensuring the vehicle registration (Matrícula) is current, as some insurers will not renew coverage if the registration is expired.
  • Confusing mandatory SOAT coverage with supplemental private liability insurance, which often require separate processes.
  • Incorrectly entering vehicle identification numbers (VIN or chassis number) during online renewals, which can lead to coverage invalidation.
