Motor insurance renewal in China

How to renew motor insurance — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 3 September 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission (CBIRC) / 国家金融监督管理总局 (National Financial Regulatory Administration).

Renewing motor vehicle insurance in China involves purchasing a new policy before the current one expires to ensure continuous coverage. Compulsory Traffic Accident Liability Insurance is mandatory for all vehicles, while commercial insurance options are optional but commonly selected for additional protection.

Your timing

It is standard practice to begin the renewal process at least 30 days before the current policy expires. This allows time to compare quotes from different providers and ensures there is no gap in coverage, which is a legal requirement for operating a vehicle.

Start 30 days ahead

A 30-day window provides sufficient buffer for processing and avoids administrative issues if a policy lapse occurs.

The process

  1. 1Verify the expiry date of the current Compulsory Traffic Accident Liability Insurance and commercial policies.
  2. 2Contact an authorized insurance company or a licensed broker to request a renewal quote.
  3. 3Submit the necessary vehicle and owner information for risk assessment.
  4. 4Review the premium calculations and select the desired coverage levels for both compulsory and commercial components.
  5. 5Complete the payment of the insurance premium.
  6. 6Confirm receipt of the electronic policy and ensure the insurance information has been updated in the national traffic management system.

What to bring

  • Vehicle registration certificate or license plate information
  • Identity document of the registered vehicle owner
  • Copy of the previous year's insurance policy
  • Details of the vehicle's driving record or no-claims history

Who handles it

China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission (CBIRC) / 国家金融监督管理总局 (National Financial Regulatory Administration)

Premiums are determined based on vehicle type, safety record, and local regulatory pricing bands; please verify current rates directly with a licensed insurance provider.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Failing to maintain active Compulsory Traffic Accident Liability Insurance can lead to heavy fines and vehicle impoundment.
  • Changes in vehicle usage or modifications may affect premium calculations and should be disclosed.
  • Ensure that the insurance provider is officially licensed to operate in the specific province where the vehicle is registered.
