Business licence renewal in Slovakia

How to renew a business licence — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 3 September 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Okresný úrad, odbor živnostenského podnikania (District Office, Trade Licensing Department).

Renewing or updating a business licence in Slovakia involves notifying the District Office (Okresný úrad) of any changes to business data or ceasing operations. If the business data remains unchanged, the licence (živnostenské oprávnenie) generally remains valid indefinitely, provided the trade is not suspended.

Your timing

While standard business licences do not expire, it is recommended to review your registration status at least 30 days before any planned changes to business activities or corporate details to allow for processing time at the Trade Register.

Start 3 days ahead

The standard electronic processing time for simple changes is approximately 3 working days, though physical filings may take longer.

The process

  1. 1Verify the current status of the trade licence through the online Trade Register (Živnostenský register).
  2. 2Identify if any details (address, scope of business, responsible representative) require an amendment.
  3. 3Prepare the notification of changes form, available via the central government portal (slovensko.sk).
  4. 4Submit the notification electronically using an eID card or via the relevant District Office in person.
  5. 5Receive confirmation of the updated trade licence from the Trade Licensing Department.

What to bring

  • Electronic identification card (eID) for digital submission
  • Completed notification form for changes to the trade business
  • Proof of legal usage of the business premises (if changing address)
  • Document proving authorization (if acting as a representative)

Fees vary based on the method of filing; electronic submissions for simple trades are typically free of charge, whereas physical filings at the office incur administrative fees. Confirm current rates at the official government portal.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Failing to notify the office of address changes within the legally required timeframe can result in penalties.
  • Ensuring the correct 'free trade' (voľná živnosť) classification matches the actual services provided.
  • Verifying that all necessary permits for regulated or craft trades are still valid if the business scope has been expanded.
