Passport renewal in Namibia

Written from published rules on 26 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security (MHAISS), Namibia.

Renewing a Namibian passport typically involves submitting an application form along with required documents and photographs to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security. The process can be done at a regional office in Namibia or a Namibian diplomatic mission abroad.

Your timing

It is generally advisable to begin the passport renewal process several months before the current passport's expiry date. This allows sufficient time to gather all necessary documents, schedule appointments if required, and account for processing times which can vary.

Start 60 days ahead

Processing times for passport applications can vary significantly, especially for applications submitted from outside Namibia. This lead time allows for potential delays, appointment scheduling, and courier services if applicable.

The process

  1. 1Obtain the passport application form from a regional MHAISS office in Namibia or a Namibian diplomatic mission abroad, or download it from the official MHAISS website if available.
  2. 2Complete the application form accurately and legibly, ensuring all required sections are filled out.
  3. 3Gather all necessary supporting documents, including the current passport, proof of Namibian citizenship, and any other specified identification.
  4. 4Obtain two recent, identical passport-sized photographs that meet the specified requirements (e.g., plain background, no glasses, full face).
  5. 5Pay the prescribed application fee at the time of submission. Details on payment methods should be confirmed with the relevant office.
  6. 6Submit the completed application form, supporting documents, photographs, and proof of payment to the nearest MHAISS office or Namibian diplomatic mission.
  7. 7Collect the new passport once notified that it is ready, typically upon presentation of the old passport and the receipt.

The fee for a Namibian passport renewal should be confirmed directly with the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security, or the relevant Namibian diplomatic mission, as fees can change.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure all supporting documents are originals or certified copies as required; photocopies without certification may be rejected.
  • Confirm photograph specifications beforehand, as non-compliant photos are a common reason for application delays.
  • Verify the exact processing time and collection procedures with the submission office, especially if traveling soon.
  • If applying from abroad, be aware of additional courier costs and potentially longer processing times.
