Passport renewal in Indonesia
How to renew a passport — how it works anywhere
Renewing an Indonesian passport involves submitting an application through the official immigration portal or mobile application, followed by an in-person visit to an immigration office for biometric data collection. The process requires validating personal details and attending a scheduled appointment to finalize the issuance.
It is generally recommended to initiate the renewal process several months before the current passport expires. High demand for appointment slots at immigration offices can lead to significant lead times, and processing times for the document itself typically span several business days once the in-person appointment is completed.
Start 90 days ahead
Starting the process at least three months in advance accounts for potential appointment delays and the standard processing time for document production.
The process
- 1Download the 'M-Paspor' application or access the official immigration registration portal to create an account.
- 2Select an available immigration office and choose a time slot for the in-person visit.
- 3Upload digital copies of required documents as specified in the application portal.
- 4Complete the registration and receive the billing code for the passport fee.
- 5Pay the passport fee through authorized bank channels, post offices, or designated payment platforms.
- 6Attend the selected immigration office in person for biometric data capture (photo and fingerprints) and document verification.
- 7Collect the new passport once notified that it is ready, or opt for a courier delivery service if available.
What to bring
- Original Indonesian National Identity Card (e-KTP)
- Family Card (Kartu Keluarga)
- Current passport
- Birth certificate, marriage certificate, or baptism certificate (to verify identity details)
Who handles it
Direktorat Jenderal Imigrasi (Directorate General of Immigration)
Fees for passport services are regulated by government decree and vary based on the passport type (e.g., standard e-passport vs. regular passport). Current fee schedules should be verified directly via the official immigration website.
What commonly goes wrong
- Ensure that the name, place of birth, and date of birth on all supporting documents match exactly to avoid processing delays.
- Appointment slots at popular immigration offices can fill up quickly; check for availability regularly if no slots appear.
- Failure to attend the scheduled in-person biometric appointment may result in the automatic cancellation of the application.
