Passport renewal in Algeria

Written from published rules on 28 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Ministère de l'Intérieur, des Collectivités locales et de l'Aménagement du territoire (Ministry of Interior, Local Authorities and Regional Planning).

Renewing an Algerian biometric passport requires submitting an application to the relevant local municipal authority or consular office. The process involves verifying personal identity, providing biometric data, and returning the previous travel document for cancellation.

Your timing

It is standard practice to initiate the renewal process at least 6 to 12 months before the current passport expires. This buffer accounts for potential administrative delays, high demand during holiday seasons, and the time required for centralized production of the biometric document.

Start 180 days ahead

Processing times can fluctuate based on volume; starting 6 months early ensures travel plans remain unaffected by administrative queues.

The process

  1. 1Verify the status of the current passport and ensure all civil status information is up to date.
  2. 2Access the official Ministry of Interior portal to view the application requirements specific to your place of residence.
  3. 3Prepare the required physical documents and photographs according to the current specifications.
  4. 4Submit the application in person at the local town hall (APC) or the nearest Algerian consulate for residents abroad.
  5. 5Provide biometric fingerprints and signature as requested by the attending officer.
  6. 6Monitor the application status online using the tracking number provided at the time of submission.
  7. 7Collect the new passport in person, ensuring the old passport is presented for cancellation.

What to bring

Fees for the fiscal stamp vary based on the type of application and are confirmed at the municipal or consular office; check the official portal for the most current fee structure.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Incomplete documentation, particularly discrepancies in civil status records, can cause significant processing delays.
  • Photographs must strictly adhere to biometric standards; non-compliant photos will be rejected at the submission counter.
  • Applicants residing abroad must register with the relevant consulate before they are eligible to apply for a passport renewal.
