Motor insurance renewal in Algeria

How to renew motor insurance — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 3 September 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Ministère des Finances - Direction Générale du Trésor et de la Comptabilité (General Directorate of the Treasury and Accounting).

Renewing motor insurance in Algeria involves updating a policy contract with an authorized insurance provider to maintain mandatory civil liability coverage. Policyholders typically choose to renew with their current insurer or switch providers before the existing contract period expires.

Your timing

It is generally recommended to initiate the renewal process at least 15 to 30 days before the current policy's expiration date. This allows sufficient time to account for administrative processing, verification of vehicle documents, and the issuance of the new 'attestation d'assurance' (insurance certificate).

Start 21 days ahead

Allows time for the insurer to assess any changes in the risk profile and for the physical document to be processed or delivered.

The process

  1. 1Verify the expiration date printed on the current insurance certificate (attestation d'assurance).
  2. 2Contact the current insurance company or an authorized broker to request a renewal quote.
  3. 3Review the coverage terms to confirm if any adjustments are required for the vehicle or the driver.
  4. 4Submit the necessary documentation and pay the premium to the insurer or authorized agent.
  5. 5Collect the new insurance certificate and the updated 'carte verte' (international insurance card) if applicable.

What to bring

  • Previous insurance policy or certificate
  • Vehicle registration document (Carte Grise)
  • Driver's license of the policyholder
  • Proof of identity

Premiums are regulated by the state but vary based on the vehicle's power (fiscal horsepower), the driver's history, and the type of coverage (third-party vs. comprehensive); exact fees should be confirmed directly with an authorized insurance agency.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Driving with an expired certificate is a violation of mandatory insurance laws in Algeria.
  • Failure to display the current insurance sticker on the windshield can result in fines during routine traffic stops.
  • Ensure that any changes in the vehicle's usage or ownership are disclosed to the insurer, as these may impact the policy validity.
