Motor insurance renewal in Philippines

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Various private insurance companies licensed by the Insurance Commission (Komisyon ng Seguro).

Renewing motor insurance in the Philippines generally involves contacting an insurance provider or agent, providing vehicle details, paying the premium, and receiving updated policy documents. This process is typically handled directly with the insurance company.

Your timing

Most motor insurance policies are renewed annually. It is advisable to begin the renewal process a few weeks before the expiration date to ensure continuous coverage and avoid any lapse in protection. This allows time for comparing quotes, processing payments, and receiving new policy documents.

Start 21 days ahead

To allow sufficient time for comparing options, processing payments, and receiving updated policy documents before the current policy expires.

The process

  1. 1Review the existing motor insurance policy, including coverage details and expiration date.
  2. 2Contact the current insurance provider or an insurance agent to inquire about renewal options and quotes.
  3. 3Alternatively, compare quotes from several different insurance providers to find competitive rates and suitable coverage.
  4. 4Provide necessary vehicle information and owner details to the chosen insurance provider.
  5. 5Select the desired coverage type (e.g., Compulsory Third Party Liability, Comprehensive) and any additional benefits.
  6. 6Pay the renewal premium through the accepted payment methods of the insurance company.
  7. 7Receive the new Certificate of Cover (COC) and policy documents from the insurance provider.

What to bring

  • Previous Certificate of Cover (COC) or policy number (for existing policyholders)
  • Vehicle's Official Receipt (OR) and Certificate of Registration (CR)
  • Driver's License (of the primary driver, if requested)
  • Proof of identity for the vehicle owner (e.g., valid ID)

Who handles it

The cost of motor insurance varies significantly based on factors such as the vehicle's make, model, year, value, coverage type, and the chosen insurance provider. Quotes should be obtained directly from insurance companies or agents.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure continuous coverage by renewing before the current policy expires to avoid a lapse.
  • Carefully review the terms and conditions of the new policy, including coverage limits and exclusions.
  • Compare quotes from multiple providers to ensure competitive pricing and appropriate coverage.
  • Confirm the authenticity of the Certificate of Cover (COC) as it is required for vehicle registration renewal with the Land Transportation Office (LTO).
