Vehicle inspection renewal in Costa Rica
How to renew a vehicle inspection — how it works anywhere
Renewing a vehicle inspection in Costa Rica, known as Riteve or officially as Revision Técnica Vehicular, involves bringing the vehicle to an authorized inspection station to verify its mechanical and safety compliance. Upon successful completion, the vehicle receives a certificate and sticker that must be displayed to remain compliant with transit laws.
It is standard practice to schedule an inspection at least several weeks before the current certificate expires. Appointment slots at busy stations can fill up quickly, and allowing extra time ensures that any necessary mechanical repairs identified during the inspection can be addressed before the deadline.
Start 30 days ahead
A 30-day window is generally recommended to account for potential appointment wait times and to allow for minor repairs if a vehicle does not pass on the first attempt.
The process
- 1Verify the inspection schedule based on the vehicle's license plate number ending digit.
- 2Schedule an appointment through the official inspection provider's portal or telephone service.
- 3Ensure all necessary documentation, including vehicle registration and proof of payment, is prepared.
- 4Present the vehicle at the assigned station at the scheduled time.
- 5Receive the inspection report and, upon passing, the updated certification sticker.
What to bring
- Vehicle registration (Derecho de circulación)
- Identification document (Cédula de identidad or residency card)
- Proof of appointment
- Evidence of any required payments
Who handles it
Consejo de Seguridad Vial (COSEVI - Road Safety Council)
Fees are set by the government and can be confirmed on the official COSEVI or the authorized provider's website; costs vary depending on the type and weight of the vehicle.
What commonly goes wrong
- Failing to appear at the scheduled appointment time may result in penalties.
- The vehicle must be clean and free of loose objects inside to pass the inspection.
- Modifications that do not comply with manufacturer specifications or local safety regulations can cause a failure.
- Ensure all lights, indicators, and safety belts are in perfect working order prior to the visit.
