Renewing a vehicle registration in Chile, known as the 'Permiso de Circulación,' is an annual process required to legally operate a vehicle on public roads. It involves verifying current documentation and paying a tax fee determined by the vehicle's valuation, which can typically be completed online or at municipal offices.

Your timing

Most vehicle owners begin the renewal process well in advance of the March 31st deadline to avoid long queues at municipal offices. Processing times can vary significantly depending on whether the renewal is handled online or in person during peak demand periods.

Start 30 days ahead

Allowing one month provides sufficient time to address any pending traffic fines or technical inspection issues before the final deadline.

The process

  1. 1Verify that the vehicle has a valid 'Certificado de Revisión Técnica' (technical inspection certificate) and valid 'Seguro Obligatorio de Accidentes Personales' (SOAP insurance).
  2. 2Ensure all outstanding traffic fines recorded in the 'Registro de Multas de Tránsito No Pagadas' have been settled.
  3. 3Access the chosen municipality's online portal or visit the municipal office in person.
  4. 4Submit the required vehicle details and proof of insurance.
  5. 5Pay the calculated 'Permiso de Circulación' fee.
