Motor insurance renewal in Azerbaijan

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with İcbari Sığorta Bürosu (Compulsory Insurance Bureau - CIB).

Renewing motor insurance in Azerbaijan involves updating the compulsory third-party liability policy, known as ICB (Compulsory Insurance Bureau). This process ensures that a vehicle remains legally compliant for operation on public roads.

Your timing

It is standard practice to initiate the renewal process at least 7 to 14 days before the current policy expires. This buffer accounts for system processing time and ensures there is no gap in coverage, which is a legal requirement for vehicle registration and operation.

Start 14 days ahead

Ensuring coverage remains continuous avoids potential administrative penalties and ensures uninterrupted eligibility for technical inspection.

The process

  1. 1Verify the expiry date of the current policy via the official CIB information portal.
  2. 2Choose an authorized insurance company or an online insurance aggregator platform.
  3. 3Submit the vehicle registration certificate and the owner's identification details.
  4. 4Calculate the premium based on the vehicle type, engine displacement, and the driver's bonus-malus coefficient.
  5. 5Complete the payment through the insurer's portal or at a physical branch.
  6. 6Receive the electronic policy, which is automatically registered in the state database.

What to bring

  • Vehicle registration certificate (talon)
  • Owner's identification document (ID card or passport)

Premiums are set based on government-regulated tariffs that vary by vehicle type and engine capacity; check current rates on the Compulsory Insurance Bureau website.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure that the vehicle's technical inspection is up to date, as insurance cannot be issued without a valid inspection status.
  • Verify that the insurance company is licensed by the Central Bank of Azerbaijan to provide compulsory motor insurance.
  • Check that personal data matches the information held in the state vehicle registry to avoid processing delays.
