Passport renewal in Albania

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Ministria e Brendshme (Ministry of the Interior) / Drejtoria e Përgjithshme e Gjendjes Civile (General Directorate of Civil Status).

Renewing an Albanian passport involves submitting an application at a local government office or police station. Applicants must provide biometric data, including fingerprints and a digital photograph, to be processed for a new travel document.

Your timing

It is generally recommended to begin the renewal process at least 3 to 6 months before the current passport expires. This accounts for potential peak processing periods and the time required for the production and delivery of the physical document.

Start 90 days ahead

Standard processing times vary based on current administrative volume and the chosen delivery method.

The process

  1. 1Verify that the necessary application fee has been paid at a designated banking institution.
  2. 2Schedule an appointment if required by the local Civil Status office or police station.
  3. 3Attend the appointment in person to provide biometric data, including digital fingerprints and a facial photograph.
  4. 4Submit the application form and provide proof of identity as required by the officer.
  5. 5Collect the new passport once notified that it is ready for pickup.

What to bring
