Travel visa renewal in Vietnam

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Cục Quản lý xuất nhập cảnh (Immigration Department of Vietnam).

Renewing a travel visa for Vietnam typically involves applying for an extension through the Vietnamese Immigration Department before the current visa expires. The process usually requires submitting an application form, a valid passport, and sometimes other supporting documents.

Your timing

It is generally advisable to apply for a visa extension at least 1-2 weeks before the current visa's expiry date. This allows sufficient time for processing, which can vary, and helps avoid potential overstay penalties.

Start 14 days ahead

This timeframe accounts for typical processing times and allows a buffer for any unforeseen delays or required additional documentation.

The process

  1. 1Verify the eligibility criteria for a visa extension, as not all visa types or nationalities may be eligible for extensions, or the extension period may be limited.
  2. 2Obtain the required application form for a visa extension, typically Form NA5, from the Immigration Department or an authorized agency.
  3. 3Complete the application form accurately and gather all necessary supporting documents, which usually include a valid passport.
  4. 4Submit the application and supporting documents to the Immigration Department (Cục Quản lý xuất nhập cảnh) office in Vietnam or through an authorized travel agency.
  5. 5Pay the applicable visa extension fee.
  6. 6Await processing of the application. The passport with the extended visa will be returned once approved.

What to bring

  • Valid passport with at least six months' validity beyond the requested extension period and blank pages.
  • Completed application form (Form NA5 for visa extension/change of purpose).
  • Proof of current legal stay in Vietnam (e.g., current visa or entry stamp).
  • Recent passport-sized photographs (check current requirements for number and specifications).

Visa extension fees vary depending on the type of visa, the requested extension duration, and nationality. Applicants should confirm the current fee directly with the Immigration Department or an authorized agency at the time of application.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Overstaying a visa can lead to significant penalties, including fines and potential future entry bans. It is crucial to apply for an extension before the current visa expires.
  • Eligibility for extension and the maximum extension period can vary based on the original visa type, nationality, and current regulations. Not all visas are extendable.
  • Regulations and required documents can change without much notice. Always confirm the latest requirements with the Immigration Department or a reputable local agency.
  • Applying through a reputable travel agency can simplify the process, but verify their legitimacy and service fees.
