Driving licence renewal in Vietnam

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Bộ Giao thông Vận tải (Ministry of Transport) / Sở Giao thông Vận tải (Department of Transport) of provinces/cities.

Renewing a Vietnamese driving license typically involves submitting an application and required documents to the Department of Transport, undergoing a health check, and waiting for the new license to be issued.

Your timing

It is generally advisable to begin the renewal process several weeks before the current license expires. This allows ample time to gather necessary documents, schedule a health check, and account for potential processing times or appointment availability at the Department of Transport.

Start 30 days ahead

This timeframe allows for collecting documents, completing a health check, and potential processing delays. The actual processing time for the new license is typically much shorter once all documents are submitted.

The process

  1. 1Undergo a health examination at an authorized medical facility and obtain a health certificate.
  2. 2Prepare the required documents, including the application form, health certificate, current driving license, and identification.
  3. 3Submit the complete application package to the local Department of Transport (Sở Giao thông Vận tải).
  4. 4Pay the prescribed fee for the renewal.
  5. 5Wait for the application to be processed and the new driving license to be issued.

What to bring

  • Application form for renewal of driving license (Đơn đề nghị đổi, cấp lại giấy phép lái xe)
  • Health certificate issued by an authorized medical facility (Giấy chứng nhận sức khỏe của người lái xe)
  • Original and copy of the current Vietnamese driving license (Giấy phép lái xe cũ)
  • Original and copy of identity card (CMND/CCCD) or passport (Giấy tờ tùy thân)
  • Two 3x4 cm passport-style photos (Ảnh màu cỡ 3x4cm)

Who handles it

The fee for renewing a Vietnamese driving license is typically around 135,000 VND. This fee is subject to change and should be confirmed with the Department of Transport at the time of application.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure the health certificate is from an authorized medical facility and is recent, as there might be a validity period.
  • Check the specific requirements of the local Department of Transport, as minor variations in required documents or procedures might exist.
  • Confirm the operating hours and any appointment requirements for submitting the application.
  • Expired licenses might incur additional steps or penalties, so timely renewal is important.
