Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Serviço de Migração (Migration Service). Rules here vary, so check carefully.

Renewing a residence permit in Timor-Leste generally involves submitting an application and required documents to the Migration Service before the current permit expires. The process ensures that foreign nationals continue to meet the conditions for legal residency.

Your timing

It is advisable for individuals to begin the renewal process several months before their current residence permit expires. This allows ample time to gather all necessary documents, schedule any appointments, and account for processing times, which can vary.

Start 90 days ahead

This lead time is suggested to account for potential administrative processing periods, gathering all necessary documentation, and any unforeseen delays or requirements from the Migration Service. Starting early helps ensure continuous legal residency.

The process

  1. 1Verify the expiration date of the current residence permit.
  2. 2Gather all required documents, including the existing permit, passport, and any updated supporting documentation.
  3. 3Complete the application form for residence permit renewal, available from the Migration Service.
  4. 4Submit the application form and all supporting documents to the Timor-Leste Migration Service.
  5. 5Pay the applicable renewal fee.
  6. 6Attend any required interviews or appointments, if requested by the Migration Service.
  7. 7Collect the new residence permit once the application has been approved and processed.
