Residence permit renewal in Peru

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Superintendencia Nacional de Migraciones (National Superintendency of Migration).

Renewing a residence permit in Peru, known as a 'Carné de Extranjería' (Foreigner's Card), generally involves submitting an application for 'Prórroga de Residencia' (Extension of Residence) to the National Superintendency of Migration (Migraciones) before the current permit expires. The process typically requires completing an online form, paying a fee, and submitting supporting documents.

Your timing

It is advisable to initiate the renewal process well in advance of the residence permit's expiration date. This allows sufficient time to gather all required documents, complete the online application, and account for potential processing delays or appointment availability at Migraciones. Beginning several weeks or even months prior to expiration can help ensure continuous legal residency.

Start 60 days ahead

This lead time accounts for potential administrative processing times, the need to gather documents, and any necessary appointments with Migraciones, ensuring the application is submitted before expiration.

The process

  1. 1Verify the expiration date of the current residence permit (Carné de Extranjería).
  2. 2Gather all necessary documents, including a valid passport and the current Carné de Extranjería.
  3. 3Pay the required fee for 'Prórroga de Residencia' through the Pagalo.pe platform or at authorized banks.
  4. 4Access the Migraciones online platform (Agencia Virtual de Migraciones) and select the 'Prórroga de Residencia' procedure.
  5. 5Complete the application form online, attaching digital copies of the required documents and proof of payment.
  6. 6Submit the application electronically and await notification or a resolution from Migraciones.
  7. 7If approved, await the issuance or update of the new Carné de Extranjería.

What to bring

  • Valid passport or travel document.
  • Current Carné de Extranjería (Foreigner's Card).
  • Receipt of payment for the 'Prórroga de Residencia' fee.
  • Proof of financial solvency (if applicable to the residency category).
  • Other specific documents depending on the type of residence (e.g., work contract, study certificate, marriage certificate), as may be required by Migraciones.

Who handles it

The fee for 'Prórroga de Residencia' is typically 25.70 soles (S/). This fee is usually paid to the Banco de la Nación or through the Pagalo.pe online platform, using the Migraciones code 07568.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure all documents are valid and up-to-date; expired documents will not be accepted.
  • Submit the application before the current residence permit expires to avoid potential fines or legal issues for irregular status.
  • Carefully select the correct 'tipo de trámite' (type of procedure) on the payment slip and online form.
  • Regularly check the status of the application through the Migraciones online platform after submission.
