The process

  1. 1Confirm the validity period of the current ID card. While older cards had a 10-year validity, many were automatically extended to 15 years for adults. Newer cards are valid for 10 years.
  2. 2Gather the necessary supporting documents, which typically include proof of identity, proof of address, and a recent photo.
  3. 3Complete a pre-request form online via the Agence Nationale des Titres Sécurisés (ANTS) website (optional but recommended to save time at the mairie).
  4. 4Make an appointment at a mairie equipped with a device for recording biometric data (often called a 'station d'enregistrement'). This can usually be done online or by phone.
  5. 5Attend the appointment in person to submit the application, provide fingerprints, and present original documents.
  6. 6Track the status of the application online via the ANTS website.
  7. 7Collect the new national ID card in person at the mairie where the application was submitted, typically within 3 months of availability.
