Vehicle registration renewal in Iceland

Written from published rules on 26 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Samgöngustofa (Icelandic Transport Authority).

Renewing a vehicle registration in Iceland primarily involves paying the annual vehicle tax and ensuring the vehicle passes its periodic inspection. The registration itself does not typically have an expiry date that requires explicit renewal, but continued legal operation depends on these annual obligations.

Your timing

Most people receive an invoice for the annual vehicle tax well in advance of its due date, which is usually in January. Vehicles are also subject to periodic inspections, and it's advisable to schedule these appointments ahead of time, especially during peak periods, to avoid any lapse in legal operation.

Start 30 days ahead

This accounts for the typical period before the annual vehicle tax is due and allows time to arrange a vehicle inspection if needed.

The process

  1. 1Receive the annual invoice for vehicle tax from the Directorate of Customs (Tollstjóri).
  2. 2Pay the vehicle tax by the specified due date, typically through online banking or a financial institution.
  3. 3Ensure the vehicle passes its periodic technical inspection (aðalskoðun) within the designated timeframe, based on its age and previous inspection date.
  4. 4No explicit renewal application is generally required for the registration certificate itself, as long as taxes are paid and inspections are current.

What to bring

  • Vehicle registration certificate (Ökurit)
  • Proof of identity for the owner (if interacting in person)
  • Valid insurance for the vehicle

Who handles it

Samgöngustofa (Icelandic Transport Authority)

The cost primarily consists of the annual vehicle tax, which varies depending on the vehicle type, weight, and emissions. Information on the specific amount for a vehicle is typically found on the annual invoice or can be inquired about with the Directorate of Customs. Fees for vehicle inspections are paid directly to the inspection station.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Failure to pay the annual vehicle tax can lead to fines and the vehicle being marked as out of service.
  • Operating a vehicle without a valid periodic inspection can result in fines and the vehicle being prohibited from use.
  • Changes in vehicle ownership or significant modifications must be reported to Samgöngustofa.
  • Insurance must always be valid for a vehicle to be legally driven.
