Residence permit renewal in Hungary

Written from published rules on 26 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (Országos Idegenrendészeti Főigazgatóság, OIF).

Renewing a Hungarian residence permit generally involves submitting an application online or in person to the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing. The application process requires providing personal documentation, proof of fulfilling the conditions for residence, and paying a processing fee.

Your timing

It is advisable to initiate the renewal process well in advance of the current permit's expiry date, typically 30 days, but ideally up to 90 days beforehand. This allows ample time for gathering necessary documents, booking an appointment if required, and for the authority to process the application without interruption to legal residency status.

Start 90 days ahead

To ensure continuous legal residency, applicants are encouraged to submit their renewal application at least 30 days before the current permit expires, with up to 90 days being ideal to account for potential processing delays or appointment availability.

The process

  1. 1Verify the specific type of residence permit held and its associated renewal requirements on the OIF website.
  2. 2Gather all necessary documents, including proof of continued eligibility for residence.
  3. 3Submit the application, preferably online through the Enter Hungary platform, or in person at a regional directorate of the OIF.
  4. 4Pay the administrative service fee according to the instructions provided by the OIF.
  5. 5Attend a biometric data capture appointment if required (fingerprints, photograph, signature).
  6. 6Await the decision from the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing.
  7. 7Collect the new residence permit once approved.

What to bring

  • Valid passport or travel document.
  • Expired residence permit or ID card.
  • Proof of accommodation in Hungary (e.g., rental contract, title deed).
  • Proof of financial means to support oneself in Hungary (e.g., bank statement, employment certificate).
  • Proof of comprehensive health insurance or ability to cover healthcare costs.
  • Documents supporting the purpose of stay (e.g., employment contract, student certificate, marriage certificate, company documents).
  • Filled-out application form (available from OIF website or Enter Hungary).

The administrative service fee for the renewal of a residence permit is typically 20,000 HUF when submitted through the Enter Hungary electronic administration system, or 23,000 HUF for applications submitted in person. This fee is subject to change and should be confirmed on the official OIF website.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure all supporting documents are valid and translated into Hungarian by an official translator if not originally in English or Hungarian.
  • Submit the application before the current permit expires to avoid potential complications with legal residency.
  • Be aware that the specific required documents can vary depending on the category of residence permit being renewed.
  • Confirm the accepted payment methods for the administrative fee, as this may vary by submission method.
