Renewing a Guatemalan passport involves submitting an application through the national migration authority, either within Guatemala or at a diplomatic mission abroad. Applicants must present current identification, proof of payment, and updated biometric data to complete the process.

Your timing

It is generally recommended to begin the renewal process at least 3 to 6 months before the current passport expires. This allows sufficient time to account for appointment availability, which can fluctuate based on demand, and official processing times.

Start 90 days ahead

Advanced planning is advised to secure an appointment slot at preferred locations and to avoid potential delays during peak travel seasons.

The process

  1. 1Schedule an appointment online through the official portal of the Instituto Guatemalteco de Migración.
  2. 2Complete the required payment for the passport service at an authorized bank.
